Problem: The male flower horn was biting at the divider and cut his lip (not real bad so I thought no big deal) I was wrong. A few hours after it happened I looked at him and he had white puffed out skin all over and around the injury. The next day I bought Melafix and started treating with that for three days along with Aquarium Salt. He got worse. Then I tried Pimafix and the white flesh started falling off. I was happy thinking it was a fungal infection that would now be on its way to being cured. After the first few days he seemed to be making a recover as I continued to does the tank as directed. Then about five days into the treatment the infection appeared through his nostrils and became really bad again. I pulled him out and put him in a hospital tank that I treated with a medicine called " Furanase" He lived for another 4 days then died. Now I wish that was were the story ended but then about three weeks later my female, who was on the other side of the divider all of the sudden got a swollen lip and died in just two days.
I let the tank sit with no fish for a day and then I put a small 2 inch flowerhorn in the tank to see if it would be over taken by fungus. It has been in there 3 weeks with no sign of illness. So my QUESTIONS ARE.....Does a fungus need an injury to appear? Do I need to buy a UV Sterilizer to insure that the fungus is killed? Is there any other cheaper solution to insure the tank is safe and the fungus is gone without having to start the whole tank over? Please Help Me!!!
