As the title states there has been a development of some type of white fuzz, which I assume is some type of algae, growing on my driftwood. The tank has been set up for two days now and was wondering what could be causing it and what could be done to get it out of my tank. Any help is appreciated

I made a thread about this a while back and most of the replies advised me that it was algae. My tanks are in my basement with small windows so there is not much intense light during the day but the stuff still grows on my driftwood.I really don't like the look of it as it is not green and it looks like fungus.

yeah my aquarium is in my room and gets no outside sunlight but it does look nasty and would like to know how to get rid of it

It is very common for new wood. You can scrub it off, or let mah nature do her thing and ride it's course. Eventually it will go away on it's own. Ugly, but won't harm anything..

The thing is that the particular piece of wood that this stuff keeps popping up on is not new.I have had and used it off and on for a few years now.I have tried scrubbing and allowing it to dry but it still comes back.I think it may depend on the species of wood?.....I try to ignore it.

alright i will see what happens with time, once i am done with college i will try attaching java moss to it and see what happens along with getting some algae eating fishes and crustaceans to see what happens

Really, wierd? Does it appear when you first add the wood to the tank again? It seems to appesar for me as part of the process of adding new wood only for a short time and only on certain pieces. Usually malaysian.

Picking up a single (depending on tank size) apple snail or the sort is not a bad idea. If you don't mind seeing a snail(s) in your tank. They are excellent at cleanup oif this type of thing.

+1

After you get your tank cycled your fish will get some of this. Some plecos really like this stuff. My rubber lip ate what little bit I had with a new piece of wood.

well i have a very small(2") clown pleco in there and i will see what he does with it in the next few days

Yes after scrubbing and drying out the wood and putting it back into the tank the white stuff comes back within days and like I said,I got this one from another member a few years ago.I might try a pleco but then it might not like the stuff.
