Hey guys, I could really use some help here. I noticed that one of my fish had a fuzzy white substance on his eye. I did a large water change and have been treating my tank with melafix for 4 days now. The first couple days the fish seemed to be improving, but today I lost my pleco that I've had for ten years and now the stuff is spreading to more fish. I also noticed a white algae like substance on the inside glass of the tank. I'm going to do another water change and see if that helps but I could use some help identifying the culprit. Thanks. https://ibb.co/kY8dcQ

Post your water parameters. Post a side pic of the affected eye. Would suggest to move to a qt tank. Add some maracyn 2 and API fungus. Salt to the tank 1tsp per gallon. Kee temps about 78 degrees.

Update the thread as it progresses.

Here is a better picture of the most affected fish. I have some Maracyn 2 on hand so I will dose what I have and will have to pick up some API fungus when the stores open tomorrow. I have lowered my temps from 80 to 78 as suggested. I have been adding salt but I will go ahead and add some more. I'll get my parameters posted when I get a chance. Thanks for the quick response.

Hi, I can't help with your issue (especially since someone as knowledgeable as kno4te kno4te already aiding you) I just wanted to give my condolences. Losing a fish after having it for such a long time would be absolutely heartbreaking.. Sorry for your loss, but I wish you the best of luck with the treatment.

If you've added salt then no need to add more. Make sure you watch your water parameters. The abx will destroy your beneficial bacteria. Make sure your treating the water during water changes with prime or some kind of water conditioner.

Kee your fingers crossed.

Thank you for the kind words. I wish i knew a lot more. Cichlids are a definite kryptonite for me as they are a bit more overlap with bacteria/viruses etc. Plus I dwarf in comparison to some of our other memebers on the forum to be honest.

So I did a full cycle (2 treatments) of API fungus, which turned my water mutant ooze green but didn't seem to fully take care of the issue. I didn't lose any of the fish until a few days ago though (the one with the eye fungus) so it may have helped. I turned my water up to 85 degrees for a few weeks with aerators on at the suggestion of my lfs owner. I recently turned it back down to 80 and removed the aerators. The fungus isn't as visible on the glass anymore but I continue to get fish with a white film over their eye. I did make some much needed adjustments to my sump setup since this tank hasn't been running very long and has fish and filter media that were transferred over from my previous tank. Most of the actual filters were being bypassed previously with the way the water was flowing but now it runs through all of the biomedia and filter sponges. The only way I seem to be able to keep this eye issue at bay is to do 40 to 50 percent water changes every few days. That seems to improve things but only lasts a few days.

Here are my current parameters. Nitrate 5.0 (not great), ammonia .25 (not good), nitrite 0, ph looks like 6 but my test kit doesn't go any lower so it could be lower. I just dumped a whole bottle of amquel plus in once I saw my test results to neutralize the ammonia, but this new tank is really giving me fits. I had my last tank setup for years without any major problems but so far with this one I had one fish get ich and die after the first week and now this ongoing eye issue which in a couple of fish spread to the rest of their body and killed them. The tank has probably been up for two months now and was started with some water from my other tank, dirty filter media and seachem stability, but I suppose I could still be having cycling issues. What do you guys think I should do? Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about the outbreak in your aquarium. Has anymore fish been observed with fungus on them? If not I personally would just do water changes faithfully. Your aquarium will go through cycling again due to the API fungus cure.
