White mass INSIDE Wen of Oranda? Any ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an growing Oranda with pronounced Wen growth, but thier seems to be a white mass, or "white slice", hard to tell, INSIDE his wen? just above the white, at the surface, there is a little bit of white, but not much at all, and sometime it disapears altogether, with the white mass remaining more or less, with differnt shades of white intensity. Water is perfect and temps are normal. diet is normal and fish is otherwise healthy and eats and acts normally.

Any ideas?

I know about white growth on the outside of wens, but on the inside?

thoughts?

Pics? I'll need them just to be sure of this.

Don't have any here at work, but its like a slice of white haze completely underneath the surface of the bulbous wen. it seems to fade now and then. I've raised the water temps and upped the number of water changes to combat this.

Thoughts?

Hi, ok so you keep oranda's to, Have you experienced the SBD/ swim bladder diesease with any of them and if so do you have any ideas other than frozen peas and not feeding them for 3 days? Thanks

It's new growth on the wen, some comes on as white at first then changes to the color it will be. Young fish to old, I have seen at all stages but cant say I have seen it on every fish.

I have a blue one that gets the rolly pollies about once a month. He gets it because he chases any bubbles in the tank and eats them, when he poops them out (yes, he actually has air bubbles trapped in the poop), I have to go in a scoop it off the surface because it floats and the filter won't get it. Aside from keeping the tank as bubble free as possible, I also try to keep him on a high veggie diet, including spirulina. I know his isn't SBD because it's his bubble eating that gets him in trouble, I have heard that garlic can help as well for SBD but it hasn't helped us since he eats bubbles. The others in the tank haven't had any issues though.

As for the OP, I have had this occur on my blue orandas and have wondered the same thing. One of them has a very translucent wen and I have seen a creamy white haze inside on occasion and wondered if he was sick, after a week it would clear again. He also would get a new bump (like a skin tag) on the top of his wen that would be white, almost like damaged tissue, and then it would color up over a week. Since nothing else has come of it we think it's just how he grows.
