So in the next month or so I will be moving my 125g. Currently I have black sand and black poster board paper taped to the back and it creates a very very dark look. I am considering painting the back and maybe one side of the tank white, and keeping the black sand.
My question, have any of you had a white background on your tank? Did you like it?
Would this be a terrible idea simply because any algae or anything would be super noticeable?

I wouldn't like it. For one it would be crazy bright with any light. It may even stress the fish because of how bright it is, causing them to flush and show little color. Plus the algae, like you said, would be way noticeable.Right now I have a dark gray background with natural gravel and I love the look. I eventually want to get black sand because it would make an awesome contrast with my current fish. Ultimately it is up to you, obviously, but since you asked for opinions, that is mine. I could be completely wrong because I've never seen one. If you do end up doing it definately post pics because it may be excellent looking. I have also heard of foil taped to the back. I think it would look awesome with black gravel. Not crinkled up foil but straight new pieces stretching the length of the tank. It would give it a cool 3d effect I think. just an idea.

I think that a lot of Takashi Amanos planted masterpieces are done with a white background.

Okay, i just put up foil and it looks way cool. If you can get over the seam that will be there somewhere because you will have to use 2 sheets then its awesome. and it only took a couple minutes..

I currently have 3 display tanks with different backgrounds, 1 Black, 1 White and 1 3D background...

White backgrounds do give the tank a "cleaner" look and feel, although you do have to keep up with cleaning the back panel of glass as well or any algae spots will become very visible...

you might want to try something a little easier to remove before using paint. white posterboard is pretty cheap and if you don't like it, some tape would be easier to change than the paint.

Foil sounds like a good idea! That wouldn't be too bright?
I just don't like taping things to the back of tanks in general, I think it looks tacky.
I have baking foil on the back of my 55G and it looks good. the tank is heavily planted so it gives off a mild green glow with 1 54W T5HO.
try doing a better tape job. you can't see any tape on my foil background. or are you doing a tank that sits with it's back away from a wall?

What about a light tan color? That wouldn't look bad and it wouldn't be as bright
