i just got my 125 running it has white silica sand and a bunch of rocks. I used bio spira and a entire filter off my 55gal. i have 2 tiny yellow labs and a ob abd a powder blue peakock. over the past five days my ammonia has not been measurable. maybe .005. i use a aquarium pharmisutical test kit (liquid) and the color is yellow with the slightest tint of green that you would need to stare at for about ten minutes to see. does that meen the bio spira and old filter worked? Any ways my white sand has a tinge of yellow greenish tint to it in some places. could this be bacteria?

its been five days. on my 55 the ammonia was present in 2days. and as far as the sand, white silica is ok for fish. black beauty another type of silica sand that is acctualy iron slag and is sharp. i have recieved this info from many fish keepers. and lots and lots of reading and research.

sounds like you know your stuff. I've heard of some bad experiences with "silica" sand (when keeping bottom dwelling species) but I guess there are differences between the types of silica sand.

anyways, since it's been 5 days with no measurable ammonia, I guess your tank should be at the very least be partially cycled. not sure about the yellow tint, I've used white este's reef sand before and don't remember having that effect. maybe algal growth?
