Ok, a while back, our Pacu had a few white spots on his gills. We didn't do more than a water change at that point because there were only one or two, and after watching him for a few days, they would go away, and a few days later, another would come back. We were also pretty sure that it wasn't ich because the spots were slightly raised, a little bigger than ich usually looks to be, and there was always only a couple. In response to that, we've increased our water changes to 50% 2-3 times a week. His water quality is actually really good, aside from the nitrate levels which I can't ever really get to go down much, even with daily water changes. The spots actually stopped appearing, and we've continued the water changes 2-3 times a week.

The problem now.. About a week ago he started to develop white splotches on his tail fin. It's hard to really describe, but they actually look a little like hard water stains lol. At first it was one small one. Eventually it started to spread, but also seemed to lighten up. We thought this might go away a lot like the spots did. Unfortunately the splotches just keep changing. They've gotten a little worse, from how they originally started, but at this point it's like they just keep changing, not better, not worse. We also have four silver dollars, and a large pleco that aren't showing signs of anything at all.

We'd rather not have to chemically treat him since we'd either have to move him (not easy) or move the rest of the fish and treat the entire tank. One way or another, we'd really like to try and identify whatever it is that's on his tail fin. Can anyone help out? Pacu Mom maybe? ;-)

I have to post the pics from my phone, so that will be in the next post. Hopefully you can make out some of it, but being that he likes to play 'chase the light' almost as much as our cats do, the flash kept distracting him

So I just got talking to a lady at petsmart (she's the only person we'll talk to there) since we don't have any other fish stores around here. She said that it's probably Lymp.. Anyone else care to chime in on this? I'm still skeptical.

im a 2yr pacu mum and i havent seen this sort of thing before...mine HAS had white splotches on her body but it was an irritation from unbalanced water quality... (too many brazil nuts too much oil from them turn yucky very quickly in the filtres)... frequent water changes and i have had to use fungus eliminator....aquarium salt has made a big difference for her too. i have read about malachite green being poisonous for pacus so check your meds. ingredients. how is pacu doing? any changes in the spots??

Our pacu have had white areas--like crushing injuries on their tails. Keep an eye on your pacu and make sure it's not a fungal infection. I'm convinced that pacu do not live long in high nitrate conditions. You may have to do larger more frequent water changes to keep your nitrates under control. We changed out about 60 gallons from our 55 gallon tank every day (15 gallons at a time) before we got our 300 gallon tank set up.

Pacu have vivid imaginations and freak out easily--ours, big boys as they are, still freak out. It takes slamming into the side of the tank or a tank lid to bring them back to reality. It apparently isn't anything they ever outgrow. We have a bare, undecorated tank for their protection, and they still manage to cut, scrape and injure themselves. To protect our pacu, we keep the nitrates in check, run a UV sterilizer, and never introduce anything else into their tank. I don't even get worried about their knicks and scrapes anymore--they heal fast.

The first time I saw white on my pacu, I was very worried. I don't worry anymore. Here's old video. You can see a lot of white areas on Adonis. They are just missing scales or scrapes on his sides from throwing himself into the tank lids. Our pacu are rarely without some kind of booboo.
