Hi,

My little festae has pretty bad white spot. I've bumped up the temperature to about 85 degrees and did a 50% water change, is there anything else you guys recommend doing? Should I combine the boosted temperature with salt, and if so, which brand?

Cheers

Aquarium salt is pretty much a gimmick. You can buy solar salt from home depot and get 50 pounds for a couple bucks. The main thing you don't want in your salt is sodium prussiate. Check the label. I've been using mortons caning and pickling salt from the grocery store the last couple times I needed it because there is a grocery store a couple blocks from my house. Some use plain old iodized salt but I've never done it personally.

raise it one more degree add some salt and general cure for added kick in the ass =p

General cure from API is malachite green and formalin. Formalin and salt mixed together are toxic and can kill your fish. Choose one or the other IMO.

Edit: sorry, I was thinking of quick cure. General cure is metronidazole and praziquantel, which won't do much for ich. They are used primarily for internal parasites.

You want non-iodized non clumping salt coupled with a higher temperature. Plenty of varieties at the local store will fit that bill. I usually pick up a rock salt or a Kosher Pickling salt. Iodized salt can kill your fish. Look up the dosage online, plenty and plenty of resources for treating ich online.

Post a pic of the white spot. You havent really figured out what it is exactly yet. You might not even need any meds or salt.

I justu se Aquarium salt then you don't have to worry what the hell your putting in your tank. Salts from other places like home depot and grocery stores are used for other reasons. Aquarium salt is not that expensive unless your whole fishroom is infected.

was about to say have used the combo for quarantines since i began fishkeeping. =p either way i like over doing it if there is no harm, I use rock salt or mortons kosher salt if i run out
