Hey everyone,

I have this cory cat that has survivied 5 years and two tank collapses. He now all the sudden has a big white patch on his head, not a hole.... its more like missing skin. could this be ICH? or hole in head? Its all white nothing else obvious to me... anyone have any ideas? im new to this forum so searching is kinda confusing for me....

thanks!! :)

It might be a external or internal parasite... pics?

A photo of the area would be really helpful.

Ich is tiny, salt-like specks which normally cover the whole fish. It's also associated with flashing (rubbing on substrate or decor) and heavy breathing. With a Cory, you'd probably notice the breathing even more than on a normal fish, because he's coming up to the surface for air. Have you seen any of these specific symptoms?

HITH (Hole-In-The-Head) is generally associated with Cichlids, Saltwater Angels and Tangs, and others, but I've never, ever heard of it on a Cory, or, now that I can think of it, on any catfish. It usually shows up as small "pits" that get larger over time, with some whiteness around the area. Does it look something like what I'm describing? What shape is it? Does it look "deep" or "shallow?"

Parasites are very easy to rule out. Have you added any new fish into the tank recently (within the past month or so) without quarantine?

Does this look like something that has developed as the result of a scrape or a scratch? Corys have pretty good armor, but I suppose it's possible that he could have gotten a little bump on the noggin. Is it furry or fuzzy at all, like fungus? Or possibly red at all, which would indicate bacterial infection?

Could you please list all tankmates so we can get a good idea of how possible it is that he's gotten into a fight with someone? Cories aren't really great with the whole territory thing -- in fact, when placed with aggressive, territorial fish, this is often a big problem. They just don't get it, and so they continue to enter the fish's territory until they finally get beaten up or killed.

Also, if you could provide the most recent ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings, it would be a big help. Water quality is linked with the possibility of bacterial infections and fungus that would grow on an open wound, so even if you don't think these have developed yet, it's always nice to have peace of mind that you're keeping water as pristine as possible to keep the fish's immune system good and strong

I know there are a lot of questions here, but I think that answering these will get us further toward figuring out what's going on.

yes lots of questions. It started about 3 weeks ago. Not fuzzy. I looks like it could have originial been a scratch cuz it just appeared one day. It was about 3-4mm long starting from the front to the back of the headish part. It is also shallow. There is a little bit of pink underneath the surface, not sure if it is realted or not. It is not in an random shape, non specific. so far it hasn't spread to anyone else, even the little corys that i added a couple days ago.....

I dont know how to post pics or i would!! I have been adding lots of fish, but the tank is a discus tank and all the fish are community fish. when it started I only had dscus, tetras, another cory cat (same age), one ram, a pleco, otos, i think thats it. Nothing really dangerous to my knoweldge. I usually don't quarentine my fish because I have never had a problem with a mass infection. WITH THAT BEING SAID i will probably do so now!! haha. Is there a way I can quick dip him in a hign concentrated medication soluation like ive seen done on saltwater fish? I have a planted aquarium that is already not thriving and medication that I have used for parasites in the past has wiped out MOST of my plants....

It might be a parasite infection...

Go to the photo section and read reefscape's diretcions of how to put a pic up...

The problem with a medication solution is we still don't know what we're medicating for!

Since it has appeared, has it changed at all? Like, the pinkish-tinge you're talking about -- was that there at first, or has it developed?

I don't think it's parasites at all, I was only addressing it because another member brought it up without trying to help you figure out if that's what it was, and I didn't want his suggestion to worry you. That being said, this doesn't sound like it. Granted, there have been new additions, but I don't think this is a parasite. Your further description rules it out, IMO.

The thing I'm worried about is if this is a scratch, the pinkish tinge to the skin underneath could mean infection. In that case, you would need to move him to a quarantine tank to treat, because antibiotics wipe out all bacteria, including your beneficial bacteria which is needed for the nitrogen cycle.

This thread gives the instructions for posting photos:

ocean, why do you believe it is a parasite? I think it's really helpful to give reasons for your answers so that the OP can determine if their fish fits the profile of having a parasite. Not only that, but I am curious, as well, because nothing about the description sounds like parasite to me, and every experience is a learning experience!

Looks like you covered everything there, Justonemoretank.

Hey guys,

I will post a picture later on today if he will show himself long enough. The size of the patch of white has grown since intially seeing it. At first I thought it was a scratch but since it is spreading I want to say that something else it wrong....
