Have noticed a few white furry like spots on my large convict. He is approx 1 year old and I am really new to this fish malarky so I was wondering if anyone could shine some light? I tried taking some pics but can't seem to get any decent ones. The spots on located on his front fins around his gills and possibly on his tail. None of the other fish in the tank seem to have this, including another convict. Any ideas? Cheers.

looks like a fungus as it seems too large to be ich aka whitespot. try an anti fungal med and you should notice the white patches shrinking in a couple of days.

many thanks, as you are in the uk and are therefore more likely to get the same brands etc as me are there any you would choose specifically?

cheers

i wouldnt try pimafix now as it looks, even for as blurry as the pics are, like its set in so you will need a chemical treatment like waterlife protozin but be warned if you have loaches then this may not be the best choice.
if you have loaches or other scaleless fish then use interpet No.8 anti fungus. and a tip, if you ever get white spot aka ich and you have loaches use interpets No.6 as you can use it full strength with loaches and its good stuff.

glad i asked, would have taken ages to getthat out of my lfs

cheers

True fungal infections are rare occurrences. I do not believe it is fungus. It seems lesions caused by bacteria. Broad spectrum antibiotics and water changes are your main defense here.

See this thread for list of treatments you can find.

i only mention fungus as my gt had something similar on his fin right at the join too and it cleared with anti fungal meds.
the blurry pics do make it impossible to say its the same thing but it does look similar and in the same spot.
you will have to research antibitoics and tell a vet what you want/need as most have no clue about fish. i guarantee more hobbiests here know more about fish than most vets.

Most meds designed to eliminate fungal infections can actually wipe out bacterial infections often confused with fungus although most ingredients used also can prove potent to fish.:)

ahh ok then didnt know that. you do learn something new everyday.
i know the interpet meds are very gentle compared to stuff like the protozin and maxyzin from waterlife. but this gentle side can let it down when it comes to potency. the waterlife meds are very good but a last resort IMHO due to their strength. a couple of doses of the interpet meds usually works and is far milder on most fish.
i know methlyn blue is a very harsh old school med for just about everything but it can massacre filter bacteria and fish, with this stuff the cure is as bad as the disease.

i will repeat though with any prescription meds from a vet make sure you research exactly what you need as most vets have next to no clue.
