I use rosy red minnows to feed my ornate bichir and red wolf fish, ive been feeding whatever sick or dead minnows to my water snake (he eats all dead fish that come out of the aquarium). Now hes fine, water snakes reqularly dine on rotten fish, but i dont want any of this stuff to get into my nice expensive fish. anyone have any ideas? should i try getting the feeders from somewhere else? or am i freaking over nothing?

Unless you raise feeders yourself, they are a disease gamble.
Beyond disease, feeders are often lacking many vitamins and minerals.
Better off training those fish to eat pellets.

Massivore is a good pellet to get them started on if they refuse to take others. I don't have a fish that won't eat it.

I prefer the nutrient profile of NLS and Xtreme, but any of the above are better than an infected feeder being eaten.

if you want to raise feeders for your snake I would go with guppies, they breed fast and are easy to care for. I use to raise my show guppies in a rubbermaid container with a hob filter and some java moss for the fry to hide in, and they did awesome! For the fish I would definitely go with the pellets.

Ive been considering breeding guppies, they do eat pellets, Massivores. The bichir does for sure the red wolf is not a fan of anything not live so i need to give him live, any suggestions? Also, in my experience, if the fish have something to take a lil bit of aggression out on then they seem to be less likely to fight and damage each other, so basically i supplement their diet with feeders for their entertainment

If that's the case then QT the feeders for three weeks before feeding. If any sign of illness (ich etc) shows you'll have to treat accordingly before feeding them to your fish. Not the best situation but far better than just tossing them in as soon as you bring them home. If you want to breed your own I suggest Mollies they are bigger, use one male to every five females.

A QT tank would be a good idea i havent thought of that just for feeders, are the Mollies just as easy to breed? I have experience fish keeping but the only breeding has been accidents when i was a kid with guppies.

Thank you btw Tom this is a huge help, my local pet storess all say oh theyll be fine with feeders right out of our tanks but that is obviously not the case. just saying anything to make a buck

Try to convert wolf to frozen first and then pellets..Im doing that atm with my dat - first he was on fishes only..then i put few live guppies in a jar with frozen bloodworms (did that several times..patience required :) ) and after 15-20minutes put everything in tank..now he accepts bloodworms as best food there can be :) and at the moment Im looking for perfect pellets because he' very picky..plan is the same - jar, bloodworms, pellets, patience :)
