So I have two Acipenser transmontanus directly from a sturgeon farm in CA when they were fairly small. Is there a way on how to determine the gender without having to catch them. One is more slender and the other is bulky at the same size, there grew to about a little over 2ft since I got them (Or more, not exactly sure since i'm comparing them to the koi which swim at a different level). Also if anyone is curious, there in a 15,000+ gallon pond. My dad was a doubting the sturgeon's peaceful nature at first since it looked like a shark swimming with his expensive koi (Even the koi breeders in Niigata Japan asked about the sturgeon when shown the pictures).

Nice! Determining the sex of sturgeon is very difficult, and without catching them near impossible.

Good luck with your fish. It is a beauty. I think you would need to bring it out of the water to find out what sex it is. I do know that they live a long time. Great fish!

Fortunately, a procedure to sex this species in a non-invasive manner has been developed. Unfortunately, this recently developed method is beyond the mean of the average hobbyist. The method involves drawing blood samples over the course of several months and measuring the serum steroid levels via radioimmunoassay. The levels of serum testosterone will separate males from females as early as 18 months of age (depending on average water temp). The traditional method involves a surgical inspection of the gonads to determine sex once the sturgeons have reached 3-4 years of age.
