White Suckerfish??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive kept them a few times. They are hardy and depending on size and species, they will hold their own against cichlids. They have a tough skin and typically get ignored by other fish. I had rarely seen intraspecies aggression from white suckers in a tank. They learn to accept most foods fairly quickly. They are sensitive disease wise. Keep the water clean and moving. They might live in "run off" but ick and fungus will wipe them out quickly.

White suckers, IMO, are not really worth going into a small tank. They put out alot of waste and have the potential to get large. They are very common, have a large range and are commercially fished, not endangered so they are 100% legal

Thanks for good info.

Would you say they are a good fish in terms of personality?

They have an interesting personality. They like to lay around in a group, similar to corydoras. they are fairly lazy, but expecting this, they were more active than I originally expected. They foraged well and picking up sinking pellets was not hard to learn. If you like their look, get them. But they are like koi, slow moving and lazy while often sleeping

Do you need a group of them or can you keep an induvidual? Also will it be bothered by a tiny synodontis catfish which is the bottm feeder i have now?

This is a photo of the white sucker (johnny sucker i named him) i had in a 72gal. He grew very very fast and started to make a mess out of the tank, he is now outside in my koi pond and is very large.

I wouldn't mix bottom feeders like that. I've owned white sucker before. I raised a few from 2" to 8" over 6 months. I don't think you should get a white sucker unless you have a pond or a tank larger then 90gal. And please do not catch one , put it in your tank then release it, that's against the law.
