because they are excessively "pampered" on the farms when they are discovered, they tend to develop an unusually high amount of fat bodies which make them more prone to idiopathic (unexplained) death. this was further supported when a few died several years ago and we did a necropsy on one (others were in same condition based on external observation).
captive gars tend to develop quite a bit of fat compared to wild (which is to be expected), but these unusual color patterns are often babied even moreso, which can lead to an even more sensitive fish. cool fish if you can afford the price tag, although i do tend to prefer most of the natural patterns of these fish.--
