Should I be worried about this spot on my fire eel? Its behind his right eye towards the back of his head in the pic.

Still eats like a champ and I dont see him flashing or rubbing against anything

Are these guys prone to hexamita and HLLE?

Nitrates 20
Phosphates 1
Ammonia 0

Ph 6.8 -7 with co2 in planted tank

Update:

Well I learned the hard way why they are called "spiny eels"...

I decided to treat him for hex with a metronidazole QT. The only QT I have is a 10 gallon sooo 16" eel plus 10 gallon QT for 3 days will be interesting..

I cant believe the strength of these guys! He was only on the floor 3 times before I found something heavy enough to put on the lid of the tank.

Im thinking some leather gloves at the least for transport back to the main tank.

It seems like anytime they are kept on gravel instead sand they pop up with random ulcers. I would switch to sand. yeah its crazy how strong they are you can use heavy duty duct tape ( the black kind ) to tape the back of the top down on the Qt tank. Also the filter lid and waterfall area if your using a hob filter. As for moving him its easiest to guide him in to a large fish bag or very big zip lock bag to re acclimate or a fish net large enough to pinch the top shut or about a yard of soft mesh fabric. I hope he gets better fast.

Im still trying to figure out what caused this. He doesnt dig that I can see since getting the pvc tube.

I wonder if the nitrate concentration is higher in his pvc tube. Or if he does his business somewhere else in the tank.

Theres not a lot of flow around that area.. maybe ill take a sample with a syringe from inside the tube and compare with the rest of the tank.

The eel seems unfazed by current events. Still has the spot. I have no idea what timeframe to expect for healing if it happens.

Not yet. I just did a massive water change and a little gravel vacuuming.

I did get him back into the main tank. A little wiser this time.. slapped some endcap pvc on the tube while he was in there and ran into the other room lol.

I will probably take a sample tomorrow before I do another water change. My nitrates have been climbing faster than usual. . Hmm

lol love the transport. how's the lil guy doing?

Doing just fine. The mark is still there but has not affected his appetite.. hes actually been out and about pacing the glass waiting for a meal when the lights are on which is different

And I did catch him sleeping in my java fern forest on top of some driftwood at the top of the tank so maybe he only stays in the tube during daylight?

Or hes planning an escape lol

Lol glad to hear hes ok. You should wait a couple hours after you turn out the light and see what hes up too
