hey all, as you can probably tell from my posts im more of a construction head than a fish species guru so, i have a question!

Polypterus%2BOrnatipinis%2B2.jpg

saw this fish on a malaysian web site linked through google images. its labled as a .......pinnis

pretty sure its not though due to the external gills.

any ideas....

I NEED THIS FISH IN MY LIFE!

polypterus ornatipinnis. It's called a ornate bichir in common terms. The external gills will go away in time.

Just as a note, a regular ornate wouldn't be that attractive cuz they are usually captive bred.

I got my ornate when he was about 3 inches and now it's about 4 months later and he is about 5 inches and he has little nubs as external gills so i would say the gills would go away in about 6-months - 1 year. from what i see is that the ornate there is about 2.5-3 inches?

Ornate are very attractive when little. The pattern fade when adult.

Not true. Their patterns do not fade when adults.

Compare 3"-7" to adult ornate 12"-18" which one prettier:) do you have a big ornate that still has the bold pattern and colors when young? I want to see.

My ornate looked the same ever since 4" to 17". She's not the best looking but I like her.
