I am a bit confused. I have 2 tanks with convicts. A 20 with 2 juvenile male (I think) convicts, who the fish store cleric was sure was female. they get along alright and I'd hate to kill one and no one I know has room of a proper set up. My fault that i couldn't tell the difference. I have a 55 with a large male and a smaller female convict. the 20 has a ghost cat and a tequila sunrise guppy, and a couple khuli loaches. I added a couple dwf platies to it. they turned up missing no fins, no dead fish on the floor. just gone! went down tonight, didn't see one of the convicts. tomorrow is cleaning day and i keep pretty thick cover with fake rocks and plants, so he may just be hiding. the 55 I have 5 of khuli loaches, a tad pole and had 2 platies (red bodies, black tails). everything looks healthy, but the platies are gone. I had 3, lost one a couple days after I moved it to the tank, I found it's body looking like a normal decomposing dead fish. if it's my convicts, why is the TS guppy there, it's been there since I 1st cycled the tank. same with the KL. If they died what ate them, and why didn't it eat the one out of the 55 gal? water parameters are normal as usual, the water is hard as a brick, the ammonia is safe, nitrite safe, and nitrates are good. the temp in 55 is 78F the 20 is 74F.
What to do about the males. Do you think a convict would be happy in a 10 gal by him self or is 2 in the 20 better. I realize bigger is better, but I got the 10 for a quarantine tank, and I'm back to deciding do i want to grow out baby blue gills and maybe a small bass or get an Oscar. so what to upgrade to in the future 240 to 300 gal or a 125. don't want to do anything till i decide, and no hurry to do that. I could keep an eye out for another used 55, but anyway.

just an update, really missing fish, but I found a spine in my 55. everything looked healthy, I am down to one convict. I don't understand it, thinking the other just snapped. they both looked healthy, nothing different about them, been together for 3 weeks. no signs of aggression.

Well I'm blind, the little convict turns invisiable, or he was hide in the fake rocks and stay while i was moving them around in the tank to clean. They were 2 in there monday, well they still are too.
