I am just curious, as this is my livelihood, how many people within MFK attend their local/regional clubs?

I have actually been looking into one recently. Never been but as I get more and more rapped up in this hobby I think this is something I am going to do.

I wish there was a group around here. I used to belong to the North Jersey Aquarium Society in my teens. I was a 20 year member of the San Diego Tropical Fish Society. I tried to start a club up in MS. Only a couple of curious people showed up looking for snacks. Then people started leaving boxes and bags of abandoned fish on my door step so, I quit advertising.

NJAS is great, i am speaking there in July. I will have to dig around for you to see if there is any active club in your area.

Personally, clubs MAKE the hobby for me.

I'm an active member of 2 local clubs, Medina County Aquarium Society and the Ohio Cichlid Association. But I'm also a member of the Greater Akron Aquarium Society and I enjoy attending many of the other local aquarium club auctions and events.

One of the disadvantages to having so many clubs available locally is that there are so many opportunities to buy used tanks, equipment and plants plus all the diverse amount of fish that catch my eye. This has forced me to expand the number of tanks I keep so it is now becoming an obsession.:grinno:

I've been a member of NJAS for years. I am the mentor chairman. Help new members become familiar with the club, hook them up with breeders, help find them someone to answer their fish questions, etc. Fish clubs are great for learning about the hobby, acquiring new fish and plants, and making new friends. Lots of other activities - fish shows, bowl shows, speaker programs, fish and plant auctions, swap meets, fish collecting trips, shop hops, road trips, summer picnic, holiday party, etc. Members are entitled to discounts at many local fish stores and pet shops.

Looking forward to your presentation in July. Also looking forward to the NJAS 60th Anniversary Convention and Fish Show this fall. Check out the NJAS website http://www.njas.net for more information about the club.

NJAS would be my local club. It's just a little too far for me to make the meetings with my work schedule and the traffic at that time of day. I wouldn't mind starting one in Central Jersey.

I am an inconsistent member of the local club here. I used to go all the time, then I stopped for a few reasons, the people are cool though.

The Jersey Shore Aquarium Society meets in Freehold, NJ. Don't know how far that is for you.
