What's your best guess? The gash appeared today some time between 11:30am - 9:30pm. I fed the fish at 11:30am and this gash wasn't on the eel.

Tank size is a 210

Fire eel is about 24"

Tankmates:
10" Hoplias curupira - it's been with the fire eel for quite some time and has taken a few nips here and there in the beginning but none lately. When it did bite it would go for the rear tail.

10" Vampire Armatus - I haven't seen any aggression from this fish It kind of just does its own thing and just begs me for food

18" longnose gar - This is the newest tank mate.

The rest are bichirs and they surely didn't do this.

My guess is the gar since it's a one-sided linear bite mark. I can try to get better pictures tomorrow but the eel's behavior is normal it's eating as usual

Are the pipe edges smooth?
Looks more like a scratch from sitting at one end looking round and getting spooked rather than a bite.

I did sand them down as much as possible but this could be the case!

I sure hope so. Enjoying this temporary group of friends for now.

I did readjust the pipes during a WC and it was underneath the 3 pipes and I felt a jolt. Could be also I didn't notice the gash during the morning feeding.

Looks like a scratch. Doesn’t look like a bite from a gar.
If it was the armatus there would be a two hole marks in the eel 😂
Not your wolf fish, a chunk would be taken out or the damage would look more serious
Bichirs ‘vacuum’ their food. Definitely not bichir either.
