I was wondering who doesn't use sand or gravel on the bottom of their tanks. I personally have a bare bottom tank its just seems a heck of slot cleaner instead of debris collecting in there does anyone else do this

I have several tanks with sand and some with gravel. All my tanks I have setup to re-create the natural environment of the species in the tank. Its more work yeah but it forms more bio filters (gravel) and has less stress on the fish.

I have sand in most of my tanks… fry tanks are bare bottom as well as my 300 gal Rubbermaid… both for cleanliness purposes…

I have tahitian sand in my 55g, but I'm using 2-3" black river rocks for my 220g that I'm in the process of setting up. I figure that the gaps will be just large enough for me to be able to blow out any debris that settles to the bottom. Might even do a reverse flow under gravel filter.

A bare tank might seem easy and all but doesn't that bore the hell out of your fish? They need something to do and I think they're happier when they're in something that mimicks their natural setting. Do you have a decent background or any decorations or just a plain tank?

I put over half of my rock collection in one tank and it didn't change the ph a lick. Great place to store some pretty rocks and adds color to the tank.

To me having substrate makes the tanks look so much nicer.

To me, the fish tanks with out substrate is just too barren..... but that is me.

Tanks with substrate is good for you!

Viva la differance!
