Who has a large dovii ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am sure they get big , but not sure how much.
I have a Dovii male , who is around 10 - 11 inches.
I have another Dovii , not sure if a male or female in a 1500 ltr sump tank , all alone.
Planning to keep it for sometime to see how big can it get

I've read dovii get to 30 inches but how rare is this ? I want a big active fish possibly
I would say pretty rare to get a fish like that to such a size in an aquarium

The reason I ask is I'm going to be building a large tank about 9x4x3 for my office in about a year, I have another post about doing groups of fish like frontosa and such but it crossed my mind to do maybe a dovii a large male dovii

24" is not uncommon, if kept in optimum, proper conditions, 30" may be an exaggeration.
In last months issue of the Buntbarsche Bulletin (the Journal of the American Cichlid Assn), the author of an article talks about the 1000 gal tank he kept dovii in, and in retrospect suggests 1000 gallons is "not " enough, or humane for dovii.

Guapote Mel, had on that was 27" I seem to recall. It was as tall as most "big" chichlids are long.

Just breaking down what you are saying. A Dovii should really be in a 500 plus gallon aquarium to even get close to its potential.

" I want a big active fish possibly" Sorry but a big active fish should be something you want "certainly" not something to just be kicking tires on so to speak. Its a large commitment, lost of water changes, lots of investment for a fish like a Dovii, not just something you casually get into.

A Hatiensis would require less space, are more active but are still large and demanding with great personality.

may not be an ideal fish for an office setting, all things considered.

It's an "office" in my basement, room would be 10' by 15' I have an old 120 that's 4 foot long I would be building a 9x4x3 foot tank to go on the back wall of my "office" I was thinking of getting a dovii because of the size but I would want to make sure it swims around a lot, I want a busy tank in my "office"

The tank would be about 657-675 ish depending on the corners because I have to angle them

My "office" would be used for making bullets or tying flys. My desk would go the length of the tank

Oh and my question of "possibly" wanting a big active fish is just me trying to decide what to put in the tank. A male dovii, 15 frontosa, 500 male fancy tail guppies just me looking for ideas, I don't want to get a dovii and find out in 5 years they only get 20 inches and sleeps all day,
