Cichlasoma umbriferum, any one got good info on these great looking fish? i've heard they need 500gal alone.....heard they get 24"+ as males. are they just the meanest cichlid or what? has anyone ever kept them succesfully w/ any other fish? breed them? i wish all these large nice looking cichlids would put up w/ eachother so i could have a sick ass tank w/ having 10,000gal tank haha. so guys please gimme your thought. i notice alot of talk about jags, RD, Midas, FH, GT, and other large fish.........what is there to say about the umbee from ppl who have owned them. thanks

They're caquetaia umbriferus not cichlasoma. That might help you when researching them. I've never seen a tank raised umbee reach 24", the biggest one I've seen in person was maybe 16". Lot's of people keep them. You're probably going to want a 180gallon for a pair for life, no other tankmates and keep a divider between your male and female. I know a big vendor who bred his in a 90gallon until his male killed his female a few months ago and couldn't find a decent sized wild female.

ok so why can't i see the edit post button?....the hell did it go? mabe cuz i started the thread... my bad

You can only edit a post within like 15 minutes of creating it.

I have owned a few. As stated before, they seem to be more aggressive to conspecifics and don't color up (nicely) until 6-8"

Torn on if I should get more. Boring looking fish as a juvie but spectacular as as adult.

great fish, i own a 20" male an he has been tank raised from 3" to 15" in a 90gal an from 15" to 20" in a 180gal an he is only 2.5 years old, so do'nt let people tell you that you are going to need a 500gal tank because thats simply not true but he is very mean.
