Been pondering the idea of a monster tank for my future house and would love to get some ideas! The tank maker I am looking at is Glasscage they sell a 96 x 49 1/2 x 24 1/2 Tall for about 3500 bucks. I was wondering about getting it taller though maybe another foot taller.

>:)Pictures of yours??

Something for thought would be that anything much taller than 24" won't fit through a standard door. You want a dimension in the 2ft range to be able to fit, although it might not be a problem depending on how your house is setup. For most people that is the limit because you would either have to remove a large window or assemble on site, and that makes getting it out in one piece not an option.

I have a 540, it's 30 inches tall. I went with that because, like woefulrelic said, it fit through the door--just barely. I wouldn't go any taller than that because it's the deepest tank that I can reach the bottom. So I can stick my arm in and touch the bottom if I'm standing on a step ladder. That's a HUGE deal.

I wouldn't do a glass tank, but this is hotly debated here. I feel like acrylic is less likely to bust. It's also much lighter. The only problem I have with acrylic is you can't keep big cool pleco's in an acrylic tank. You can buff scratches out of acrylic tanks, but you won't be able to keep up with a big Royal Pleco rasping all over it at night. I hear stingrays tear up acrylic, too.

Check out my build thread, and my "540 -- mostly vieja" threads. Video's of the tank and the fish in it. If you know you want to keep fish, acrylic is awesome. If you want rays or pleco's, then you might have to get glass. Just do some research if you're gonna get a big glass tank--it's gotta be done right.

I agree with the previous posters--going taller than 30" will make it more difficult to get in the house. Doing an onsite tank build, or building around the tank are options when getting a tank through a doorway won't work. I think that's why many big tanks are kept in garages.

If you have a really tall tank, a platform behind the tank is the way to go--like in this build

BTW, bigrich545 has the tank now. But even with a platform, you are not going to be able to reach in and touch the bottom of the tank. My tank is not even half that size, and only 48" tall, however I need a step ladder to get out of the tank. BTW, it still is not set up

Our stand and tank were moved in, and then the outside wall was finished. Just things to consider when thinking about getting a big tank.....

I have a 505 gallon and it is 36 inches tall... I like the height (30 would be ok too) but 24 would be to short for my taste. I had mine built on site because we couldn't get it in my basement. here is a pick and the build thread is in my signature.010.JPG

yo i just looked at this. i would definitely not trust this. 1/2 inch acrylic side panels? that is just waiting to bust. im still even skeptical of doing a 3/4 inch panel. do becareful with this.
My other tanks that are 2 foot tall are only half inch glass or acrylic. Why should I be more worried about this one being half inch also. The real pressures on the tank comes from the hight of the water.
