Somewhere lost
Well not really a killing spree, but I have a 90gl that has a ~7" florida gar, ~6" lima shovel nose cat, ~3" boita loach, ~3" Urau, and ~4" Leporinus. I use to have a ~5" albino seginal bichir in there but he got beat up so I removed him to heal figuring it was the gar who did it. Now my gar is torn up some. Who do you think did this? The Bichirs face was beat up, some of his fins missing, you could see blood under the skin on the tail. He has since healed up fine this was roughly 3 weeks ago. Now the skin under the gars mouth is torn up. I want to know who you think is doing this so I can get them out and keep things peacful in the tank. I am thinking it's either the boita, urau, or leporinus.

I know they are but when I got the boita I was told he was being aggressive towards the other fish which is why he ended up back at the fish store. So I think I might take those 2 out and give them the 55 for now.

leporinus for sure. mine killed a lungfish 3 silver dollars and a flagtail before. i first thought there was some sort of epidemic in my tank with the tail and fins of my fishes starting to look like there is some bacterial infections in them, then i spent some time trying to observe the tank and the leporinus is the only one in good condition. then when the lights were subdued that's when i noticed that it kept attacking the tails and fins of my fishes.

LOOK AT THE TAIL OF MY LUNGFISH, GOOD THIN IT RECOVERED.

chop that tetra in half for the gar

The leporinus is actually beat up also. I moved him out of the tank and he is in a 55gl now. I really like the look of him but I might take him back as I want that 55gl to be a salt tank and he probably will out grow it. He actually didn't attack anything in till now and was in a tank with smaller fish before.

I also added melafix to the tank, I hope my gar will be fine. It looks like just a layer of skin hanging off the bottom of his jaw. I know the skin will heal but do you think I shouldn't feed him in till it's healed so it doesn't stress him out, or just feed smaller fish to him? Also when do you normally switch gars from live to pellets? He has attacked a pellet once and then dropped it. He does eat blood worms but I don't think that is a good staple diet, won't eat market shrimp.

So I ended up putting the gar to sleep. After looking closer the flesh was no longer connected to his jaw. I watched him closely hoping he would heal, after a few hours he started gasping and was staying near the bottom of the tank. Which he normally hangs around the top. So I am going to take the botia and leporinus back to the fish store and have them get me another gar. After having this one I don't think I will ever want to go without a gar, he was one of my fav fish I have ever owned.
