I know they are fine in fresh...I've kept mine in fresh for well over a year.

I need to know how brackish they are.....in other words how much will they tolerate?

I keep a tank of brackish fish now at 2TSP/gallon. I have no idea exact salinity since I don't have a hydrometer that reads that low.

Can my dats be kept in this???

They're causing problems....it's either to the brackish tank or I have to get rid of them.

ANY experience shared keeping these things in brackish would be GREATLY appreciated.

You're kidding me. No one here has an answer for this??????????

My LFS keeps silver dats in their brackish tank. I'm not sure what the salinity is in it but I know it is actually a true brackish set-up.

all i know is that there brackish, and live there, but many keep them in fresh
its up to you

I keep my ATs in fresh, but I do add salt as a preventative measure.

If you can't read any sort of specific gravity on a hydrometer, I wouldn't worry about anything...you should be fine if you drip them.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have been looking for one of these for awhile, or at least info on them.

From what I've been told/read - they should be in a brackish enviroment with a specific gravity anywhere between 1.006-1.012. My LFS keeps one at the store - and his brackish tanks are set at 1.008.

Anyone know how big they get or their growth rate? Is getting a 2" specimen for a 125gal tank ok?

Sorry again to hijack

These fish only get about 12 inch long, so it could be kept in a 125 for life.
I do not know what Gravity is correct, I do know that many ppl on MFK have kept them in complete fresh without any probs.

This is going to be a long post...but I think it should help you out, Daeorn.

ATs tend to max out around 12" or so. Any specimen above that would be pretty exceptional. Their growth rate is like other dats...slow. If you want to bulk them up quicker just feed a very high quality, varied diet accompanied buy frequent, large water changes and keep the water temp a little higer...like low to mid 80s (mine are kept at 83*).

Right now I have 10 ATs ranging from 4" up to about 8" and not a single one is in brackish water.

I bought the majority of them from an LFS who had them in brackish. To tell you the truth, they looked like crap in the store. They weren't eating well, no stability, very timid, and a few had cataracts.

I picked them up anyway (couldn't say no to the deal I was given) and right away acclimated them to a freshwater QT with Melafix and Aquraruim Salt to clear the cataracts.

Within a few days everything looked fantastic. They started eating like pigs (about an entire flat pack of krill everyday), stability on all the dats, eyes cleared up, and they got there tenacity back. There were little squables over food and territorry, and now when they see me come in the room it's like a whirlpool with all the splashing and excitement.

And who says fish are boring...:screwy::D

my silvers are kept in completely fresh water with a stingray, an arowana and disthicodus togeter with NGTs. they all seem to be doing fine, eating well and their colour is clear with bold stripes. One is about 6" and the other about 3". the six incher hasn t been long in my tank just a couple of weeks but the 3 incher is well over 4mts in the tank and doing very well in my tank. they were both bought from brakish water setups and acclimated to freshwater with no probs at all.
