I ordered a 30G Long tank. Dimentions being 48"L,12"W,12"T. Now a 55G Is only like 6" taller. Would the same type of fish fit in both tanks? I wanted it to be my grow out tank for now and have 3 Rope fish later one. Would they fit? I heard 55 is minimum but this would make it easyer for them to breath. Any thoughts?

A 55g is 21" tall so 9" taller and there is a big difference in the two tanks. Explain your thinking of making it easier for them to breath.

I would go for the 55 why set yourself up wth such a minmal size of 30 when for the little extra money you might spend a larger tank will give you many more years of satisfaction.IMO

Because they breath air. :D

Surface area of the water is the same in both tanks, right? So how would the lower water level be better?

They are thinking that the lower hight will make it easier for them to breach I assume....It does not work like that though. They are built to go strait up and down. When the head breaks the water column the fish can with ease stick its head out and grab a breath. With a lower tank it will cause an adult to have to develop an unnatural breaching technique like using the walls to get fully out enough to get a breath. If they are at an angle when trying to breach the weight of the water makes it difficult for them to pull it off.....They need a tank height at least as long as their body IMPO....

Ya... these fish actually gulp air at the surface then come back down to swim. I always thought a 60G tall was 22 inches high? Oh well, ither way, this tank is for the bottom of my 2 stage metal stand. the reason for being so short is because its also easy to clean and accsess. If they can't live in a 30, they will go in the 55 I will order later on in the year.

Thanks everyone.
