I am thinking of getting some rays in the near future once all my research about them is complete. However there are a few questions I have not been alble to find a thread about. It is in regards to breeding habits of rays.

Generally is it the female that selects its mate? Or do female rays mate with any male? Essenstially if someone is looking to make a mating pair would it be better to get 2 males and one female or two females and one male?

How many pups on average do they tend to have. I read that as the rays get larger they normally have more pups at a time. I want to make sure that if I would be lucky enough to get pups at some point down the line I would have the facilities to house them properly. Does this also depend on the species?

Thanks for your help.

its generally a horney male that forces a female into it!.

pups can be anywere from 1 to 10 (more or less), it all depends on the type of ray and the individual ray. first litter seems to be smallest then larger litters as they get more experianced.

females can fall pregnant straight after birth and can have 1 litter useing more then 1 males sperm. so if she had 6 3 might be one males and 3 anothers.

to much breeding to often can have bad results as the females take i HUGE battering most of the time and need to recover.

i havent bred any rays yet, this is just what i think i know lol.

So would you say if I where to have 3 rays would it be a wiser choice to have one male and two females? I would think that with two males the one female would take too much of a beating. Which rays tend to have larger litters? Thanks for your input.

yes i would do it that way. if you had 2 males they would both stress he female could be a death warrant... what about same sex groups? theres no bother then

Thanks for all your help. I dont really wanna go same sex groups, I would like to try and get some pups eventually.

Would 3 rays be ok in a 7 ft x 4ft x 14 inch tank? for life? Or should the tank be a little higher.

It probably needs to be higher.... they like some head room for swimming.
