i read a post on fixing a 100 gal acrelic thnk i replied this - the bonding agent used on acerlic actuly melts the acerlic so it makes a chemical bond, and contains lots of monemer and ( asitone to acelarate thp prosess)
so silicone will not make a chemical bond .
so hear comes the crazy part deteregent is hsed to aberase acerlic .
with a stiff brisel brush scrube that corner only from top to bottom leaving a 1'' to 1/2''sratchy ser face on ethir side using a mix of powdered detergent (tide) and water after that you must rinse very well use warm water to desolve deiergent then rinse agin soap kills.
now you con use silicone to make a mechanal bond I am no expert at any thing but I have lot of interest and picked up lots of usefull knoledge along the way , also I have not tried this so i would get an second apenyon

well at least some one heard me now try ansering the? maby oddball has some intelagent input ? he sugested using alcohal to clean area first that would also have a chemical reaction on acrlic right ?

I just picked up my first acrylic tank not long ago so I am interested in the correct answer also. Hopefully somebody will chime in soon.

The number one point in bonding acrylic or glass is to get the bonding agent BETWEEN the items being bonded.
The silicone will not penetrate into the area the way weld-on would.
Even after roughing up the surface...the silicone is not going to give much of a mechanical bond.
The alcohol would be used to clean oils and contaminants from the surface so that there is nothing to inhibit bonding... it is pretty standard practice in all forms of bonding
