im looking into buy a nitrate reactor

but to tell the truth i need more info before i buy one

the 2 im looking at are the aqua medic NR1000 and the shuran nitrate filter 100

one uses sulpher beads the other one need to be fed

i have been told that the sulpher bead type will make the ph lower but is this only a problem if its being use on a marine tank

my tank and tap water is normaly around 7-7.5 so a little drop to say 6.5 would be help full

any info would be good

ive heard that the bead type can release nitrate back into the aquarium if not well maintained and if you live somewhere where the power goes out sometimes then the ones that need to be fed can cause an amonia spike when the power comes back on but this can be fixed by putting a switch on the plug that will not allow it to turn back on until you manualy hit it giving you time to clean it first

stick with water changes unless your running a pond or something or try a sump with live plants hit me up with your specs and i can get you some plans

i was told the type that you need to feed smells of bad eggs

i think the sulpher type is the one for me but i just need to know how much the ph will drop

i will still be doing water changes twice per week with water with a ph of 7 and just want to know if that will be enought to keep the ph buffed

the removal of nitrates requires the nitrates to be converted to nitrogen gas and this gives off a rotten egg smell or a fishy smell so if you have heard this abut the unit that is fed imo it is doing a good job

different units work in different ways and i dont think the sulpher type smells as much as the others

but any info would be good
