Where the fish go.
So about 5 mins ago i tried to move my senegal bichir in with my florida gar, the bichir is over half the size of the gar so i thought it would be time to move them in together as i bought bichir to be a tank mate for the gar. Well...... dropped the bichir in and the gar came over and just layed next to the bichir and everything seems like it was going good so i went into the kitchen to get somthing to drink when i hear a loud splash I run into the room to see the gar has the poor bichir in his mouth trying to get him down lol! I run up to the tank and try grabbing the gar and with all the ruckus going on from my hands trying to get him he drops the bichir. The bichir is fine with no visible cuts or bite marks and is now back in my severum tank to put some more size on him before I try this again. Im sure im not the only one to have this happen right?

i mixed my bichir with my florida before and nothing happened. i had senegal as well since they were most common in my area. Gar was 12" while bichir was 6-7". I did have an issue with my florida with my gator gar tho. gator was like 20"...he attempted to eat a 12" florida....that was a no go haha. Maybe your gar was hungry? or maybe it has an attitude like a gator.

Hes not hungry still has food swimming around in his tank and always has food there waiting, mabe hes just an ashole lol. Ill try and get some massovore pellets for the bichir to get some faster size on him and try again when hes bigger(not bite size)

Tell us more about your feeding - a healthy gar never leaves "food swimming around" for very long.
Also, how big are the fish ?

The florida gar is 8" and the bichir is 4.5-5" long, the bichir is feeding on NLS and the gar feeds on minnows, (have starved him till he looked a little to thin for comfort and still wouldn't except pellet or market shrimp) I keep at least 4 swimming around at all times as hes small and smaller younger gar benefit for having food available to them at all times, so a satisfied gar will "leave food swimming around" for longer than a gar that gets fed by daily or weekly. He's gets 60%+ weekly water changes as do all of my tanks except the fry tanks as those get twice a week 50% water changes.
