Okay, so today while i was feeding my feeder tank, to my complete surprise i discovered some rather large pinkish looking eggs on the top of my tanks hood...

Although i'm almost 100% sure its my Apple Snail that laid them i just wanted to ask some expert advice to see if they are what i think they are???

In the tank there is 1 Pregnant Marble Cray along with around 20-30babies, around 5-8 Ramshorn Snails, and only 1 Apple Snail which is quite large now...

So besides trying to ID who's eggs these are, i'm also curious as to whether or not these eggs are even fertile, since i only have 1 Apple Snail in the tank and i'm not sure if they can even reproduce asexually...

Here are some pics of the eggs, oh and the don't mind the measurements on the ruler, since it wasn't held up right next to the eggs coz i didn't want to risk knocking them off the hood and into the water...

Look like sterile apple snail eggs, but I'm no expert.

Thanks for the response, but can any one else confirm that these eggs are INFERTILE??? coz i would hate to get rid of them unless they are just sitting there waiting to go bad..

Females can store sperm for a few months. If you recently got the apple snail then they could be fertile. I'm not sure since I have only seen fertile clutches laid. When my snails laid her eggs they were not so red but more pinkish.

^ Thanks for the info, i'm presuming yours managed to hatch??? if so can i ask roughly how long did it take??? Personally, i've had my snail for under 6 months if i remember correctly, although it could very easily be longer...

BTW, does any one have images of fertile Apple Snail eggs so i can compare them to see how big a difference there is in color between those and mine..

They look freshly laid to me. Give them five weeks. If they don't appear to turn white and crumble revealing snailettes at a slightest touch after 3-4 weeks, dispose the eggs by crushing or freezing them. High temperature and humidity (but not too wet) will force the eggs to hatch quickly. My average hatch rate was 3 weeks with shortest in 18 days if memory serves me right.

I just scrape the clutches off (though scraping also results in some eggs crushed) and wrap them in damp paper towels and then place inside a microwave oven container which is left to float in the tank under aquarium light. Works well for me.

Here's a picture of mine hatching.

Mine took a few weeks to hatch. My snails laid at least 3 clutches and all of them hatched even though I never had a male.

Thanks for all the replies, i'll be sure to keep an eye on the eggs to see if there is any change in them over the next few weeks...
