Howdy,

I'm thinking about adding a few to my African pikes, but they'd all eventually go into a *gasp* planted tank.

It's stated in many resources online as well as books that they nibble on plants, but I am trying to get _first hand_ insight from people who have actually kept them in a (more or less planted) tank. I understand that they avoid some hardier plants and devour delicate macrophytes, just interested in examples. Anyone feed them lettuce?

Also, temperament. Again, lots is said online but I want to hear from _you_. I am concerned that many folks re-state the same info, which may go back to just a couple of fish, while those hobbyists who are happy with the fish never post their delight. But MFK is more experienced than that, and I appreciate your thoughts. Be it happy or not - let me know how your Distichodus behave(d).

Are they better solo or schooling?

Thanks,
HarleyK

oh, and post pics :naughty:

I'll be watching this one as I have been thinking about getting one to keep with my Papirocranus afer.

I had a d lussoso with my odoe before, they did fine, my tank is abnormally tall tho so rarely did they inhabit the same plane. Both were singular, and my odoe abnormally come I believe for being a singular odoe. But the lussoso did love to nibble at my silver dollars sometimes, but only really hated my brycon. Never tried it in a planted tank though.

I had one and it kept beating up my wifes flagtail. I got it at 3". I eventually put it in a spare tank with a broken heater. Oops.... It was about 8-9" when it expired. I got another that was the perfect size snack for a 20" Endlicherii poly. I just saw the tail. The poly didn't need to eat for a long time. I have another on the way. I tried feeding various veggies to the first one but it completely ignored them.

Very old thread but I will bite.
Had one (single) from about 3" to about 7". Beautiful fish but became less orangish and more grayed out but still somewhat orange. Not aggressive but very assertive and hefty. Didn't hurt but nobody messed with it either. It was with a D. sexfasciatus, two different Leporinus, an A. anostomus, an Abramites headstander, a severum, and a large pleco. For obvious reasons, this was not a planted tank. Any vegetable matter (read food) was readily consumed and fought about. Nice, unusual fish. Unfrequently seen, usually just single specimens.

One of the biggest jerks there could be in any community I placed it. Bites other fish viciously. Takes out scales, breaks off catfish spines, etc.

Thanks for breathing new life into this thread! Good input. Looks like a hit-or-miss fish...
