Hey everyone! Just picked up a pretty decent sized marble angel fish Sunday. The body alone, without the fins, is about the size of a ping pong ball or a bit bigger. I had 3 platy (1 male, 2 female), 2 cardinal tetras, 2 black skirt tetra, and a bristle nose pleco. The tank is only a 29 gallon. Seems like the angel has been getting nipped at by something. I don't remember his fins looking this rough when I got him. I put the platy all in a breeding box for now to keep them contained. I had 3 angels a couple months ago and they died looking rather beat. Been a long time since I messed with more community fish like angels, tetras, platy. Maybe platy are a bit more nippy than I think. What are good tank mates for angels? And what kind of stocking should I be looking at for a 29 gallon? I'd like to get at least one more angel if I can and a few more cardinal tetras. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

It's the black skirt tetras that are the finner nippers. I'd also get at least 8 more cardinals so they feel safer.

Really?.... That's surprising! I saw one of the platy take a dive at the angel and figured it had to be them. Anyone else seen this from Black skirts?

Black Skirts are notorious for it. Platies are too though, could be either.

Black skirts are best kept in a bigger groups, 2 is not enough for them to play & spar amongst each other.

I don't know about that. I have a 72 Gal tank with 2 Angels. I USED TO have Neons and Cardinal Tetras (look the same to me). When I noticed their number dwindling, I replaced a few. When they dwindled again, I replaced some more. Then I noticed the Angels going after the newbies like Vultures as soon as they were released into my tank. They sucked them up within seconds, and chased after the remaing ones until they caught them. I think my Angels also went after all my Betas (I had 6 of them at one time). It seems that my Angels are more peaceful with the rest of my fish.

I was thinking the black skirts too. It's like tiger barbs... keep them in a small group and they're going to fin nip. Keep them in a larger school and fin nipping stops.

I forgot about angels picking off smaller tetras, either way tetras should be kept in schools of 6 or more. Also bettas and angels are a bad mix. Even bettas and bettas.
