How ofter do I need to do a water change, I'v been doing one every sunday, adding water conditioner, salt and melafix when needed, is that ok. everything is zero exept nitrate which is 20ppm, im trying to prove a paoint to my dad, he says you need to do one every 2 months but i say every week, or every 2 weeks, whos right me or him??

The cleaner the water the better. Cichla come from river systems that have constant water movement. It will also help grow your cichla faster and keep them healthier.

Depends on how big your tank is.. If you have one betta in a 1000g, and you have a lot of media in a big sump, I dont think you need to change water for its whole life .

But since U keep big fish like bass, I think it's good to always do water change every week.

But it is best imo to have big tank with lots of media and less fish and leave the water alone as long as you can.. But we can't have that because they are all in the tanks so we have to change water..

Your dad is right in a way. If you have a huge huge tank with just one bass then he could be right.

Traditionally, stocking tanks lightly to reduce the frequency of water changes was the norm for tropical fish keeping. Unlike small community fish, peacock bass are very large fish that eat high protein diets, and are raised at much higher temperatures. A very aggressive feeding schedule creates a lot of waste in a warm tank. That means you need a LOT of oxygenation, and a lot of water changes, to keep them healthy.

Frequency of water change is dependent on nitrate level. Major reason for it.

ok now he wants to know why!! he wont understand!! :irked:
we put these fish in a box they have an incredible metabolism we feed NO over feed our fish to attain fast growth and then create large quantities of poop so either you have to remove the poop via water changes and vacuming or have an increadably huge filter system so the fish does not burn to death in his own fecies !!!! Not to mention just like we like fresh air fish like fresh water we can live in filthy air that does not mean we like it and if we want a fish to give it's best we must give them the best:)
