I have three fish in my tank in question. Two, a mayan and a polleni, are beginning to look ragged. I have noticed the mayan chasing the polleni, who is smaller. But I have also noticed the carpintis chasing the mayan more. carpintis is bigger. Im thinking of giving the mayan to a friend because i dont like ragged looking fish in my tanks. only question is, how likely is it that the carpi is beating on both and not the mayan beating on the polleni. i dont want to remove the mayan only to have the polleni become the sole target of the carpi. the tank is 125 and there are two other tank mates who are larger than all three and pay them no attention. thanks for the help

The carpintis is probably beating on both but the Mayan is also being an aggressor. I would remove the Mayan but add some dither fish. How much bigger is the carpintis compared to polleni?

Cichlids with similar colors and body types will often beat on each other, as they see the other is competition. The carpintus and Paratilapia both have the blue spangles, and see each other that way, and all 3 species are very similar in body types.

Pictures of the fish...I think carpintis is first..still pristine absolutely no missing scales or shredded fins. the second should be the polleni...he has some minor wear in this pic, and is actually a little more ragged now but not "injured" or sick, just some scales chipped and fins nipped...and the last is the mayan, before anything looking good, but now is really missing a few scales but fins seem to be intact. they don't really look alike, maybe body shape but completely different coloration and sizes

and as far as dithers there are five silver dollars in there and a much larger oscar who pays not attention to anyone...besides me and the pellets of course lol

That's a Texas not a carpintis

I feel the need to inform you my friend the two are one in the same. There are two types of texas though, Herichthys cyanoguttatus vs Herichthys carpintis, those in the know know you need to differentiate. Thanks for the reply though. ;)
