Ill be the first to admit I’m no expert on angels. I’m planning on a compete overhaul of my 300 this winter and want to go with angels. Can someone give me some details on whether it is worth spending a ton of extra coin on altums versus getting nice cb silvers from a local breeder? I’d be in the market for cb altums as well that were conditioned to tap water.

Guess you haven’t seen a school of adult altums

Can't beat the look of Altums or their schooling behavior. I've kept all kinds of angels over the years and all color varieties and finnage types. Hands down my Altums are my favorite.

Beautiful Angelfish specie.

Now I’m torn. I’ve kept manacapuru red backs before and really liked them. Do they get as big and school as well as altums? Overall, what are your thoughts comparing the two?

my profile pic is an F1 Altum, and should be a good indication of how beautiful the species can get. Scalare are nice, Leopoldi not so much (imo), but Altums are superb.

Bigger, more colourful, nicer shape, behaviour etc

There's no comparison between Altums & any other angel. They are the pinnacle, hands down.
Now Manacapuru reds are a gorgeous angel on their own too though. Easier to keep & less expensive. They do not get as large as altums. F1s are pretty easy to find, just make sure the seller specifies they get the red backs. Manacapuru can either have the red back or look like a plain silver depending on catch location.
