My aquarium has been set up for 6 months now and it is a 120g south american set up. All my fish had been growing steadily and behaving well since I got a majority of my stock in late november. About 2 weeks ago I awoke to find one of my Red head Tapajos dead, I didn`t really know what to think, the fish was feeding normally and in perfectly good health it was pale looking but I`m guessing because its dead.
A couple of days ago I found another of my Tapajos was looking pale and ragged, he had what looked like some kind of wound near his gill. it could have been some kind of fungus, I added Pimafix and about 2 days later he was dead.
I assume he got into a fight with my male red ceibal because he is a horrible fish and likes to have a go at his tankmates if they try and take food from him.
Today all my fish were acting nice and normal, the ceibal has been hiding a lot lately but he goes through periods of being reclusive. He always comes out when its feeding time. Before I turned the lights out I noticed he was looking kind of pale too with what looks like either a piece of scale falling off, or some kind of fungus, I`m not really sure. I just found the Ceibal and the smallest of my Tapajos who has never showed any signs of anything.
The Tapajos and Ceibal are all wild caught, and are the only WC fish I have in the aquarium. I figured the ceibal may have been getting into fights with the other fish and this time he got worse for ware but I haven`t actually observed any super aggressive fights, but I don`t watch my tank all that often to really see every fight.
The tank is over filtered, planted, water changes on a regular basis. I even have a powerhead to keep the water oxygenated well for Geos. I know that pimafix lowers the oxygen in the water but surely that isnt what caused this?
I did think possible asphyxiation because of the palor, but the powerhead is aimed to created surface agitation, that and my outlet from the filter provide a strong oxygenated current. The tank is at 79 degrees. I did have an issue with a heater that malfunctioned and asphyxiated my fish before, so I am generally inclined to worry about the temperature. but I feel like replacing the heater would not have changed anything as I am in acceptable parameters. Plus the heater light is usually off, and comes on periodically. if it was broken the light would remain constantly on, my broken one even fused with sand!.
I`m at a loss here, what did I deal with? some kind of fungal infection or internal parasite? all my fish are feeding and behaving normally, I have livebearers and rainbows also which are not in the least bit affected. my heckelii and Altifrons are all unharmed.
