Why are Canisters More Money than HOB?

So I constantly wonder why Canisters are $200+ USD for 450gph when a HOB of the same GPH is $50 USD...What makes them so much better than HOB H2O or is it something else?

canisters usually have more media space usually more gph to but as you said not always

More powerful pump motors, more mechanical parts, more labor intensive construction, etc...

imo canisters for bb are not the better option lower oxygen levels than alot of hang on the back filters but there are reasons why canisters are good

A canister filter is a more complicated unit... it's costs more to build... it took more research and development to design... There is a greater risk of failure therefore paying extra for a quality product is more logical...
　
Since HOB style filter manufacturers target the guy trying to save a buck... and the canister style filter manufacturers are targeting the guy looking to buy a fancier filter...
　
While canister filters do have some qualities that surpass some qualities of an HOB... it's not universally true to simply say "canisters are better"...

a larger tank with larger/more waste producing stock needs more than HOB's can supply. I love AC110's but they just wouldn't take care of stock levels that people like us prefer on larger tanks. This being said though, i think they're a great addition to mid-sized tanks for water movement.

I prefer them for heavy fish loads.

it just means you don't have to service them as often as you would with a bunch of HOB's that would clog fast..its because they have so much more media..

well i have my 110 gallon running on bith type of filters and it is great because if on failes i have the other one for backup
