Really annoys me when I buy it, I have to untie a mile of string and the ryzhome is usually snapped into several pieces which also annoys me....why?

Because the rhizome is never supposed to be buried, they are grown tied to a branch, or some other structure.
Each piece of rhizome can be grown into a separate plant.

+1 Never have to buy java fern again:)

I don't tie my java fern. I just stick them into a hole or crack in a rock or piece of driftwood.
