Im new to salt water and just recently bought a protien skimmer. I am curious about why they are used in SW and not FW. Is there some reason why it wont do the same process in FW or do people just not want to pay the extra money to buy one for their FW tanks. Thanks

On a funny note, since i had never used a skimmer i had no way of understanding (I can read something but im the type that has to see it hands on to really get it) I couldnt tell that I had it set up wrong, I had miss adjusted the air intake for several weeks LOL. Im sure it didnt skim a thing, had no bubbles for the skimming because it told me in quick setup that if i had a bubble in the tube to open the airintake all the way and i wasnt paying attention and closed it all the way (that got rid of the big air bubble so thought i was done HEE HEE). Whenever i checked the machine it was full of very pretty crystal clear water and had a cool little water tornado that you could see clear as day cause of no bubbles in the darn thing LOL. Got it working last night and have some icky stuff all ready this morning in the cup.

They only work in SW due to the properties of "salinity", a quick google search will tell you all you like to know and the science behind it. Basically the foam/bubbles in FW goes pop too quick and the fractioning between the proteins themselves with the FW doesnt happen.
People have tried, and there ARE expensive skimmers for FW, but there's easier and more effective methods in a FW setup.

That was perfect. You answered the question but not too scientific. Thanks.:)
