there are saltwater ray in the US that are larger and much more dangerous! and i feel like that even if one did get released into the wild they're not really hardy fish so they wouldn't live for too long anyways

i really want to keep one but they're illegal in GA. WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

The bureaucrats in that state decided that the risk that a possible stingray release may pose is more important than your freedom to keep this kind of animal. I don't like it either, but that is the way it is. More than likely it is because of the possibility that a native population might develop, posing a nuisance to the locals and a threat to the local wildlife.

some of the states have climates which a ray could adapt to and pose an environmental threat in some way or another. Generally, its warmer down south..... that's why u see a lot of the southern states have the restriction.

but i feel like they are plenty of fish that would be a lot more of a threat to native species and they're legal everywhere. like cichlids are boisterous, tough, and some species o cichlids could easily outcompete native species. imagine if a population of dovii (wolf cichlids) got out. that would probably mean the end of any native species in that water source.

i guess my question is, what is it that makes it illegal? is it just they're bad rep?

Everyone just answered your question...they're illegal because they can become invasive or start a native population in areas which will in turn affect true native species. Thats just how it is, there may be other fish which should be of more concern, but the government has decided rays are part of them, so thats how life is.

was my explanation not good enough? :nilly:;)

also, a much wiser and more powerful authority then ur self; deemed Potamotrygons to cause more damage to the eco-system then that of a cichlid..

That's a pretty wild assumption. Condescending, too. Lets keep it friendly and informative.

I have to say, a wild stingray population in Georgia would be pretty freakin cool.

yeah i don't know how you took that personally, i just meant that there are many more species that could be potentially damaging than a stingray.
