On contrary though, a lot of fish have common names that stem from their behavior or looks etc...so he was just asking if thats the case with oscars too. You are named at birth, and someone obviously had to think up a common name for a fish while probably looking at them at the same time. Therefore it would only make sense if their names are from something of that sort.
Roger Sleet submitted this story on 12-11-97 describing the origin of the name "Oscar":
"As you correctly say the specific name for the Oscar is ocellatus normally
pronounced os'-sel-lay'-tus. In the UK it is also pronounced os'-kel-lay-tus. Now
say that with a London accent
and it becomes Oscar-layd-us. The rest is obvious."
He also states that the name Oscar crossed the pond over to the US in the mid 60's. Until that time, US fishkeepers called them Marbled Cichlids. I do have a book called "Handbook of Tropical Fishes" by Dr. Herbert Axelrod from 1955 that calls the fish "Oscar's Cichlid", so the name may have made it's way over here to the USA earlier than that. I'm interested if anyone has any further observations on the name.
i read it was because of their personalities, they were and are like dogs in a way and oscar was a popular name for dogs and so the fish was called an oscar for it canine like behaviour. getting excited when you come to the tank, begging for food and allowing owners to 'pet' them.
