Why breeders are hesitant on breeding their masterpieces

Poor guy hope he heals up as best he can. I could relate my super koky triple line zz female got pretty smacked up by my bigger male luckily she had a small cave to keep from getting this bad.

I had them in a 100 gallon tank with lots of hiding spaces, flower pots, fake plants but neither of them wanted to hide. The female wanted to test the males strength and the male wanted to prove how strong he was. It doesn't look like it in the pictures but the female is much more massive than the male in terms of thickness of body and overall weight. As soon as I saw him starting to cower away, I moved him to a hospital tank for recovery.

Thanks for your concern, I'm sure he will be fine. I've been breeding Flowerhorns on and off for about the past 15 years and some pairs just love a good fight. It's the eye injuries that really concern me. I've also noticed that the koky females tend to be a bit more sassy. This female is now with another male and is currently showing spawning behavior. Matching smaller males to larger females has always been a challenge for my breeding projects.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a breeder but from what I've learned the female are supposed to be much smaller than male. I usually see males 8-12inch with 4-6 inch females so no chance of this happening. Guess he didn't meet her expectations of strong male. Damn

That's kinda around my pair's sizes 8" sb male and 4" female that's around 5-6" now. May try to let them have another go now that's shes a little bigger. I'll have to update my thread on that pair later.

Yep. Had it happen to one of my bonsai males. Put him in with a larger BP of all things and she put a hurting on him. Was also worried about her getting his eyes. Separated them and then tried him with another BP with success.

Hope he heels up fast for you.

Thanks for all the replies! Yes, it's definitely easier to breed with a larger male and smaller female but it is advantageous to use a younger male if you are trying to set the traits of the original male breeder. This is because you can breed the best F1 female offspring back to the father if he is young enough.

The injured male is actually doing really well and is still behaving and eating normally. I will breed him back with this same female but I'm going to pump him up first. At his current stage of growth, putting on size will occur very rapidly.
