Did a water change about a week ago and last night found my pleco bloated and dead. His tummy was dark like he had eaten but it was extremely large. I have had him about 6 months and he has never been a big eater, any ideas what happened?

:(

Bloat can be mysterious sometimes, but is usually related to a diet too meaty or very large meals. Stress can be a big player, too. Are you certain the tank is completely cycled? Was the pleco getting plenty of fresh vegetables? And sometimes there's just nothing you can do, so don't feel too bad if everything you could have controlled was in check.

When you changed the water, did you dechlorinate the new water, keep the live media intact (no rinsing with tap water, etc.)?

The tank has been running for over a year so it was cycled. I have not lost any other fish. Only food was wafers flakes and green beans. Yes I did dechlorinate and never rinse with tap. In that case was it just his time?

Wow. Sounds like all was well. Might want to diversify your food selection a little, but I've seen worse menus. There is the odd chance he ate a piece of gravel and couldn't pass it. Sorry for your loss. How old was he?

Honestly, I believe he was only a year or so. Was just a few cm when we got him only bout inch and a half before death. Now that you say so the gravel seems to fit, day before last I did notice his belly quite dark. Thought he was full but was darker then usual. Makes sense thanks for the help.

Bloated stomach means internal organ failure...

Its usually caused by stress and extreme temperature.. too hot can kill..
What size was your tank and how what kind of tankmates did you have?

I've had two plecos died from bloated.. and both were caused by extreme warm temperature....

Hmm. So you're sure that they died solely and only from elevated temps? That's pretty unlikely, though it makes sense that it could be a stressor. I wonder if anybody else has had the same thing happen. I wonder if that's what killed my Adonis?! It was during summer and the tank was hitting 90ºF by afternoon for almost two weeks straight. You may well have something here zerojquan85.

The only tank mates I had with him are guppies and they day I lost him, I noticed fry. If it were caused by a heat issue wouln't the fry be affected. Plus my tanks are in the basement were room temp is cool and regulated. The tank is kept 78F to 80F. Must have been a combo of all factors listed above.
