I woke up this morning and my beautiful Green Terror was dead. I have had him for almost 2 years and he has always been a healthy strong fish. He has survived 2 moves (not recently) and always looked great. I dont understand why he would just die one day. The water stats are perfect (ph, ammonia, nitri, nitra) and i do water changes every other saturday. An albino convict is in the tank with him as they were brought home together and have lived together for the entire 2 years.
He died sometime between 1130pm and 630am. At 1130 he was fine and had just eaten some Hikari Cichlid Gold. He didnt have any open sores, gashes, etc this morning. When i pulled him out his stomach was a tad bit puffy but he was not extremely bloated, his eyes were white and his skin pale (figured this was caused by sitting in the water) and his mouth was closed. I have kept fish for a while not and when i have lost fish in the past it was pretty obvious of what had caused it.
Is there anything else i can test the water for? What about the Convict?
:(

It my have something to do with where you purchased the fish, how in-bred he was(weakened strain). I have had the same problem with fish from PetsMart and Petco. They make it about 2-3 years and then up an die one day. This may not be the cause, but it pays to buy fish from a reputable breeder if you can find one. Sorry for your loss, I know the feeling.

i don't know why that would've happened either. sorry to hear though. i have to agree with larz though. however, i have bought fish from places like pet smart in the past and even walmart (yes, i know i know. i hate to admit it, but it was back in my earlier fish days when i didn't know any better). and actually, a couple of the walmart buys are still alive (4 or 5 years later and numerous moves). i guess sometimes it just depends on the individual fish.

it sucks pretty bad when a fish just up and dies though. sorry for the loss :(

did you do anything different that day? perhaps clean your glass with windex or any other chemical that may have got in the water somehow? i really dont know what to tell ya but that sucks.

I'm on my blackberry but that looks like a GT as well. I wonder if this is a common problem?
I rescued these 2 fish a couple years ago so I do not know where they were purchased.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
