I had a 75g with a widebar and a thinbar with beautiful colors. I found 3 more thinbars in a lfs with very nice coloration also. I put 2 of them in with my others about 3 weeks ago and the colors of the 2 new thinbars as well as my existing one look horrible. I took the other new one and put it in another tank with many aggressive fish and no gravel and its colors are great. I don't understand. Any suggestions??

there jus nervous. colors come with comfort, mine will look great when im 10ft away but if i walk up to the tank it gets dull and ugly and i can actually see it retransform right before my eyes back to looking awesome again

agreed. ive heard of some people that have dats that took 1.5 months before getting comfortable and keeping more stable. some just get lucky and as soon as they put them in the tank the dats stay stable.

my dats are stable when the aquarium lights are off, but the house lights are on. as soon as i turn on the aquarium lights some just lose all their colors. also noticed when i was housing the dats in a 20 gal. grow out tank they kept colors all the time, but as soon as i dropped them into the 170 gal. they lose their colors.

Fish get disolored when stressed, but they soon should color up.

they may never color up its the luck of the draw

depends on tankmate, water condition and the genes of eack tiger is diffrent

It's just the fish. I have a healthy littel one which is amost half black and half white. If I would have not seen his stripes at teh IFS I may think he's another type of Dat. I agree that some of it is stress, but it atleast for mine speak more about their mood than anything else. My big one is dull when he sits on the bottom, but when he's up and swiming he has more contrast. If I drop feeder fish in he gets excited and he gets awesome coloration. These fish in my experience have one of the fastest most incredible "active" coloration of any fish I have. I can simply look at their color and know how they feel. I know that sounds crazey but it's true.

Here's a trick, try this. Do a water change, maybe about 30% mine love it and for the rest of the day they get excited and swim all over and get really bright. The next day they are dull, I can check the water and it's fine. They just liked the fresh mix, kinda like food. I say give those guys some good excitment and they'll brighten up..... Or put a bigger fish in their and they will go on the defensive (stressed mode) and brighten up.

Think of them like people. Mad/Happy makes them bright. Depressed, bored, tired, etc makes them dull.

They will colour up when they're frighten or excited. Otherwise they'll try to adjust their colour to their surrounding.
Here're some trick.
1. find big, non aggressive and colorful fish such as red parrot to be tankmate.
2. Understand that dat (esp. small one) will try to blend itself into background. So use light colour gravel, light color backscreen (someone use white of just plain glass) and avoid dark decoration such as dark driftwood.
