My 2 Green Spotted Puffers will sometimes turn a greyish black color below their pattern, where they would normally be white. At first I thought it had to do with the nitrates being over 10ppm, but religious WC's haven't changed anything. They dont act wierd or stressed & they eat just fine. I am in the process of raising the salinity in that tank, but I stopped adding salt as soon as I saw this going on. Their salinity level now is about 1.008. I was going to take them to 1.012. Should I be worried? Any advice?

black underneath is typically a sign of stress at least it was for my gsp's when i had them.

how fast were you upping the salinity?

sounds way to fast to me. i think ur only sapost to go up .002 sg every 2 weeks or you will kill the filter bacteria. also i think need to get a hydrometer or refracto meter to meter the salt properly.

How do your parameters test out? Upping the SG quickly won't haarm/stress out your fish but changing parameters will. Also, how big are the puffers? Minimum of 30g for anything over 2". Is there a lot of decor in there, for them to feel comfortable?

Puffers are just over 1". Plenty of decor & parameters are stable.. ammo/nitrite are 0, Nitrate is below 20ppm & pH is 8.2. I'm trying to up the salinity slowly for the BB sake.

BBGs + GSPs = GSPs.

I thought you meant BBs were bumblebee gobies? GSPs eat them.

Oh... Nope. I meant the Beneficial Bacteria. For simplicity sake, when I'm doing WC's, can I use one of those ready-mix ocean salt bags? They say it makes 5g of full SW... Is that about the right ratio for brackish? 5g SW to 25g FW? Or is brackish closer to a 50/50 mix?
