they are kept easier than American Cichlids. you just need floating vegetation and break up sight lines and have a decent sized aquarium.

Because most people keep bettas in 2 gallon bowls and not decent sized aquariums.
true. to be honest I would dare say they make better tankmates then platys /guppies/other anataboids. the bettas understand each other's language and act accordingly. the other fish seem like they are constantly challenging the betta (in the their perspective I believe)

Mine have always beat each other up, in a 40 gal heavily planted, even if they grew up together as hatchlings.

Tried put two males in heavily planted 55gal, ended up had a male killed other male.

My neighbor had three of four bettas in a 90 and they didn't do well either.

Over here i seem to see two types of betta sellers, those that keep maybe 10-20+ of them in maybe 20G tanks before being sold...

And then there are those kept in small (maybe 0.5G cubes) and are separated by a piece of colored acrylic so they cant see each other...

They also tend to label them differently, those in individual cubes are labeled as fighting betta, while others are just named Bettas...

So my guess is, given the right conditions, it maybe possible, but probably still ill advised...

The fancy females these days look pretty similar to old school males... You likely saw a bunch of females inn one tank.

lol no I have seen it done with males and have two males myself with platys and guppies. the only danger they face is when my dragon is big enough to eat them

I'm inclined to believe HarleyK's over yours. Some fancy females do shows some male characteristics and I've seen few fancy males that resembles a female. I checked out few videos on YouTube about keeping males together and it appears its extremely rare to keep them together without fighting. There is a video that has multiple males with angelfish but the video loader used lot of currents to prevent the males fighting each other. These bettas appears to not enjoying the currents.
