My red-bellied piranha will only eat feeder fish in the dark. The only way I can watch him is if i turn on a light in the other room so there is a little bit of light. Why is this?

The reason is just its shy and not used to feeding in that condition. Hows the tank decor? is it barebones or decorated with lots of hiding places ? is it a newly acquired piranha?

try a red light, thats what i used when i had pirahnas, they seemed to become oblivious to out side conditions.

I think pygos thrive in a school so if he's newly acquired and is by himself that is normal for him to be shy. Either give it sometime or throw a few more pygos ... 5 is a good number.

quote Masterming "Having a nice piranha that refuse to eat in front of you is like having a hot gf who wont take off her clothes"

I have 4 piranha's and they have been in my tank for about 4 month's

It has 4 fake plant's and a medium sized pirate ship. It has quite a bit to hide in I will probably put some driftwood in it and maybe some more piranha's. I have had them for about 4 month's

They might be afraid that the pirates may steal their food.

As long as they are larger than about 4 inches each, you should start training them to eat with the lights on. Only offer food with the lights on and take it out after 15 minutes. After a while they will feed once the food is dropped in, especially in a small shoal. Once one starts feeding it should initiate a feeding response from the rest. Ps are greedy fish and in a group they will eat just to make sure someone else gets less food. They are probably only attacking the feeders with the lights off simply because the feeders can't see as well as the Ps can in low light situations. Ps have large eyes for a reason. Personally I wouldn't use feeders as a staple diet, they're great as treats though; stick to white fish filets, shell on raw shrimp, and pellets if you can get them to eat them.
