why do plecos need driftwood?

i have always kept driftwood in all my tanks and have always heard that some plecos need driftwood for dietary reasons. what benefit does driftwood have on a pleco?

If it helps... i keep commons, gibbs, and clown plecos

Actually I think it helps provide ruffage. ie it fills them up.

Only panaque and h. cochliodon complex fishes need it (a few other exotics, too if you can find them).
